This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
